Exploratory Writing W8A

The author pointed out that in the Web 2.0 era, the Internet is a way to create, share, and communicating artworks (Christou, 2017). It is obvious that the Internet plays a significant role in art and web art. Why are humans becoming more and more dependent on the Internet, and why are more and more artists creating Internet art? A fascinating phenomenon is that with the beginning of COVID, the Internet seems to have become a tool to save communication between people because people are restricted from meeting and gathering. This means that many traditional artworks such as paintings or sculptures cannot be exhibited in offline museums. As a result, I visited countless virtual exhibitions during the two years that COVID was in full swing. Perhaps to survive or adapt to the current environment, some artists have had to start using the Internet and moving their artwork to the Internet. In section 2.3, the author says that post-Internet is a common social phenomenon (Christou, 2017). This is not only because of the influence of COVID but also because of the excessive dependence of young people on the Internet. People initially used the Internet to share and communicate; however, nowadays, people use the Internet more as a virtual partner and create internet art as if they were creating a work of art together with this virtual partner. More and more people are learning about the world from the Internet and thinking that this is our culture. Therefore, I believe that different countries and races no longer distinguish the differences in cultures as they once were. Instead, our culture is the Internet culture; our cultural differences are the differences we learn about from the Internet.

Appropriating internet technology is not simply sharing some artworks like paintings or sculptures online. Instead, artists should use some internet technologies to create artworks. In other words, appropriating internet technology is like the artist establishes a conversation with the technology and then establishes an artwork together with technology. In this case, I think technology is like a virtual friend or cooperator. The Internet provides a space or a community for artists and everyone to share their works and communicate. In the article (Part 4), the author states that appropriating web content means everything that is recorded on the Internet (Christou, 2017). I think artists' appropriate web content in their works is very common to see in this modern internet world. The process of appropriating web content is like the process of remixing. Viewing, using, and remixing any contents like text, images, or even sounds from the Internet is one of the most common ways to form a new meaning or content for original artworks. I think this is also related to how people regard these contents online from different perspectives.
